Irish Whale & Dolphin Group

Our partner dedicated to conserving Ireland’s Cetaceans and their biodiversity.

What they do

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) is a non-profit organisation established in 1990 to promote the conservation and better understanding of cetaceans in Ireland. Their key activities include:

  • Research: Collecting and analysing data on cetacean sightings and strandings to monitor populations and distribution.

  • Conservation: Advocating for the protection of cetacean species and their habitats, including the successful campaign to designate Irish waters as a whale and dolphin sanctuary in 1991.

  • Education and Outreach: Engaging the public through educational programmes, workshops, and events to raise awareness about marine conservation.

Through these efforts, the IWDG plays a pivotal role in safeguarding Ireland’s marine biodiversity.

Why Cetacean Conservation Is Important

Cetaceans are integral components of marine ecosystems, serving as indicators of ocean health and contributing to the balance of marine life. Their presence supports marine biodiversity and enhances the resilience of ocean habitats. However, threats such as bycatch, habitat degradation, and marine pollution pose significant risks to these species.Protecting cetaceans ensures the preservation of marine biodiversity and the overall health of ocean ecosystems.

How we Help

Reforest Nation is proud to support the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group in their mission to protect Ireland’s cetaceans. Thanks to the support of our Rewild Members, we’ve donated €1,000 to assist their vital work. This contribution aids in:

  • Supporting research initiatives: Enhancing understanding of cetacean populations and informing conservation strategies.

  • Funding educational programmes: Raising public awareness about the importance of marine conservation.

  • Advocating for protective policies: Ensuring the continued safeguarding of cetaceans and their habitats in Irish waters.

Together, we are working towards a future where whales, dolphins, and porpoises thrive in Ireland’s seas, contributing to a balanced and healthy marine environment.
