2025 National Tree Week Planting Day (Co. Wicklow)

About

How would you like to join us in planting a whole forest of 40,000 trees under the beautiful Sugar Loaf mountain? We're aiming for something big here – we want to create the largest Miyawaki-style forest in all of Europe! And let me tell you, the Miyawaki method is something special – it's like a magic trick that turns a few tiny saplings into a full-grown forest in just ten years. And how do we do it? By planting the trees close together and letting them compete for the light, just like they would in a real forest. It's like a mini-ecosystem all in one spot.

Once we're finished, we're going to give our brand new forest a really special name – the Freedom Forest, in honour of all the refugees and displaced people around the world who are fighting for their own freedom.

We're going to need all the help we can get to make this forest a reality, though. We've got the trees ready to go, but we need your hands and maybe a shovel or two to get them in the ground. So what do you say? Want to come join us and be a part of something truly amazing?

What To Bring:

  1. A shovel/spade.

  2. Warm layers and gloves.

  3. Waterproof jacket.

  4. Boots or wellies.

  5. A tenacious tree planting spirit!

Location and Parking:

Hawthorn hill (A63 H364), Ballydonagh Lane, Delgany, Greystones, Co. Wicklow.

We advise parking at Kindlestown Wood and proceeding the 3 minute walk on foot up Ballydonagh Lane. After passing the third house, look for a wooden entrance on your left, marked by a yellow sign saying ‘TREE PLANTING,’ then follow the yellow arrows that will guide you directly to the planting site. In the event that Kindlestown Wood's parking is at capacity, additional parking may be available at Hawthorn Hill property (A63 H364) and further up the laneway. For the most pleasant driving experience, we recommend approaching Ballydonagh Lane from its eastern end, near Greystones, as the lane's western portion is more rugged.

Parking spots highlighted in red.

About

Would you like to see the progress of the forest you helped create? Join us for an open day under the beautiful Sugar Loaf mountain to witness the growth of our 30,000-tree forest, planted just one year ago. This is the largest Miyawaki-style forest in all of Europe, a testament to your support and the power of community. The Miyawaki method transforms tiny saplings into a full-grown forest in just ten years by planting trees close together, creating a thriving mini-ecosystem.

This event is a special occasion for all our sponsors and supporters. Bring your families and loved ones to see the growth of the trees you sponsored or gifted. It’s a chance to connect with nature and see firsthand the impact of your contributions. We’ve named this forest the Freedom Forest, in honour of all the refugees and displaced people around the world who are fighting for their own freedom.

We’re excited to share this incredible journey with you and celebrate the difference your support has made. So, what do you say? Want to join us and be a part of something truly amazing?

Location and Parking:

Hawthorn hill (A63 H364), Ballydonagh Lane, Delgany, Greystones, Co. Wicklow.

We recommend parking at Kindlestown Wood and then taking the 3-minute walk up Ballydonagh Lane. After passing the fourth house on the left, marked with a sign saying “Hawthorn Hill,” walk up the driveway. You’ll see a gate with arrows, and there will be people there to greet you and guide you up to the forest. If parking at Kindlestown Wood is full, additional parking may be available at the Hawthorn Hill property (A63 H364) and further up the laneway. For a smoother driving experience, we suggest approaching Ballydonagh Lane from the eastern end near Greystones, as the western portion of the lane is rougher.
